The Federation Council proposed allowing former spouses to inherit a share in common real estate with the deceased in the absence of heirs. The corresponding amendment was proposed on August 7 by the head of the Federation Council Committee on Economic Policy, Andrei Kutepov, to the Civil Code of the Russian Federation.

According to a copy of the document available to RIA Novosti, the head of the Committee on economic policy proposed to expand the circle of heirs of the deceased Russian's property to the ninth stage.

This category includes former spouses who act as a shared owner, "a participant in shared ownership of this immovable property, if this property was owned by two persons before the death of the testator, one of whom was the testator, and the other is a participant in shared ownership, called the heir of the ninth stage."
