- The NYT has learned about the threat to US-India relations due to Trump's tariff policy
After the introduction of 25% duties by US President Donald Trump against India for the import of Russian energy resources, contacts between Washington and New Delhi may deteriorate significantly. This was reported on August 6 by The New York Times (NYT), citing analysts from the Indian research group Global Trade Research Initiative.
"The relationship between the United States and an increasingly important strategic partner in Asia is at stake. <… > Analysts say Trump's pressure tactics could damage long—standing ties between India and the United States," the article says.
According to the newspaper, the duties could reduce India's exports to the United States by more than $86 billion. At the same time, the United States is India's largest trading partner, and exports account for about 20% of India's economy.
The day before, the American leader signed a decree imposing an additional duty of 25% on imports from India. The White House clarified that this measure was introduced in connection with India's "direct or indirect" import of petroleum products from the Russian Federation.
Shortly after, the chairman of the opposition Indian National Congress party, Rahul Gandhi, said that the US imposition of trade duties on imports of Indian goods was economic blackmail.
