Scientists have uncovered the cause of wrinkles on the fingers during prolonged contact with water. These changes are not related to the swelling of the skin, but to the reaction of the nervous system. This is stated in a study published in the journal Popular Science, which was reviewed on August 8 by Izvestia.

According to Danilo Del Campo, a dermatologist at the Chicago Skin Clinic, the unique structure of the skin on the palms and soles of the feet plays a key role in this process. These areas of skin are called "bare skin" — the term comes from the Latin word. The hairless surface is an important part of the sensory system, and the skin itself contains receptors that convert external signals into electrical impulses perceived by the brain.

According to the publication, wrinkles are formed due to the narrowing of blood vessels caused by the activity of the sympathetic nervous system.

In 2021, scientist Nick Davis from the University of Manchester conducted an experiment in which he studied how wrinkles on his fingers affect the ability to capture objects in water, writes Popular Science. He noticed that people with wrinkled fingers grasped wet objects more easily than those whose fingers did not have wrinkles. This discovery points to a potential evolutionary advantage for our ancestors: the ability to better capture fish or swim across rivers without the risk of slipping.

The publication concluded that wrinkled fingers turned out to be the result of an adaptation that benefits not only in everyday life, but also in health diagnostics.

On August 7, Ekaterina Demyanovskaya, an expert at the Hemotest laboratory, said that some people notice that their emotional state changes after eating: irritability, anxiety, or sudden mood swings appear. This is often attributed to fatigue or stress, but one possible reason may be a basic deficiency of key nutrients — vitamin B6 and magnesium. A lack of these substances can also manifest itself in the form of muscle contractions, insomnia, and other symptoms.
