The meeting of US President's special envoy Steve Witkoff with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 6 is not a breakthrough in ending the Ukrainian conflict. This was announced on August 6 by US President Donald Trump, stressing that work on this issue has been underway for a long time.

"I wouldn't call it a breakthrough. We have been working on this for a long time. Thousands of young people are dying," he said.

The US president added that despite the absence of American soldiers in Ukraine, he feels responsible for ending the conflict. Trump also noted that if he had been president earlier, this conflict, in his opinion, would not have started.

Earlier in the day, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said it was possible to hold telephone talks between Trump and Putin in the coming days. He added that there is currently no scheduled call between the leaders.

Witkoff arrived in Moscow on the morning of August 6. During the visit, he met with Putin in the Kremlin. Their meeting lasted about three hours.

Later, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov shared that Witkoff and Putin discussed the conflict in Ukraine and the prospects for possible development of strategic cooperation between Russia and the United States. Some signals were transmitted from the Russian side, in particular, on the Ukrainian issue. The relevant signals were also received from President Trump.
