Russian scientists have developed a thermal imager for noninvasive monitoring of blood flow during medical operations to remove a cancerous tumor. This was reported to the Newspaper on August 7.Ru" at St. Petersburg State Technical University "LETI".

"We have created the first fully domestic thermal imaging complex for medical diagnostics with enhanced functionality. The thermal imager included in it, using two sensors – a small–format matrix and a point sensor — allows not only to determine the exact temperature change at short distances, but also to practically determine the absolute temperature of any area of the body," said Nikolai Potrakhov, Head of the Department of Electronic Devices and Devices (EPU) at St. Petersburg State Technical University LETI.

It is noted that the device has a compact size and is easy to operate. Diagnostic results are automatically displayed on the monitor screen when the device is brought to the desired area of the body.

The combination of two sensors and shooting from a shorter distance than with traditional scanning provides a clearer image of the temperature field of the human body.

The software of the complex also makes it possible to identify areas of the body with abnormal temperatures for further investigation.

"Currently, the complex is being tested at the Russian Scientific Research Neurosurgical Institute named after A.L. Polenov, where doctors have tested a development for monitoring blood flow during operations, which makes it possible to assess microcirculation in the tissues around the tumor before, during and after its removal," said the engineer of the Department of EPU SPbSETU LETI Sergey Rostachev.

Evgeny Libson, Deputy Director of the Institute of Oncology at the European Medical Center (EMC), spoke on August 1 about the importance of early detection of lung cancer. The doctor also stressed that smoking is the main cause of cancer.
