- Russia has requested consultations from the UN Security Council in connection with the zeroing of Dodik's mandate
Russia has requested closed consultations of the UN Security Council on August 7 in connection with the revocation of the mandate of the President of Republika Srpska Bosnia and Herzegovina (RS BiH) Milorad Dodik. This was announced on August 6 by the Panamanian mission to the United Nations, which chairs the Security Council.
"The Russian Federation [has requested a meeting]," the representative office said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
It was also noted that the meeting will consider the situation around Dodik.
Earlier that day, the Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina (CEC BiH) made a unanimous decision to revoke Dodik's mandate and call early elections. The Bosnian authorities decided to revoke the mandate after the decision of the Court of appeal, which upheld the February verdict of the politician. Then he was sentenced to a year in prison and deprived of the right to hold public office for six years.
President of Republika Srpska Dodik stated that he does not intend to leave his post and the territory of the republic. He initiated a referendum, in which, according to him, the people will express their will regarding his mandate and the further exercise of presidential powers.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that the decision of the Central Election Commission of BiH, which revoked Dodik's mandate, should be reacted peacefully and reasonably. Vucic added that Serbia's policy is to be with its people and Republika Srpska, as well as to preserve peace in the region and prevent a new escalation.
