Five people were killed and 24 others injured in the collapse of a suspension bridge in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwestern China. This was reported on Wednesday, August 6, by the Xinhua news agency, citing local authorities.

"A cable broke on a suspension bridge in the Xiata area of Zhaosu County, or Kazakh Autonomous Okrug, as a result of which the bridge deck tilted, and 29 people fell. Five people died," the article says.

It is specified that as a result of the accident, 22 people received minor injuries, two more were seriously injured. All the injured were hospitalized.

The suspension bridge is closed. An investigation is underway into the causes of the incident.

On June 24, severe flooding occurred in China's Guizhou Province, and at least 150 people were evacuated. It was noted that the floods were caused by an increase in the water level in the rivers after prolonged rainfall. An emergency flood response regime is in effect in some areas of China.
