Moskalkova appealed to the UN Commissioner for Human Rights over the Hutsul verdict

On August 6, the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation, Tatiana Moskalkova, appealed to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, to protect the rights of the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Hutsul, after her sentencing.

"I consider the harsh conviction of the legitimately elected head of Gagauzia, Yevgenia Hutsul, to be a gross violation of the law and the principle of justice. <...> In this regard, I have appealed to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, to protect the rights of Yevgenia Hutsul," Moskalkova wrote on her Telegram channel.

The Ombudsman said that she was struck by the "callousness and callousness" of sentencing Hutsul. Moskalkova also called the two young children of the head of Gagauzia "innocent victims of unjustified punishment."

"There is a clear violation of the rule of law, human rights, charity and humanism," the Ombudsman concluded.

On August 5, Hutsul was sentenced to seven years in prison in the case of allegedly financing the Shor party. A protest rally was held in front of the courthouse in her support. The head of Gagauzia expressed great support from the people of the autonomy and urged "not to give up." Ilan Shor, the leader of the Pobeda opposition bloc, called her arrest political terrorism.
