Ethiopian Airlines has denied reports of negotiations and agreements with Russia on aircraft leasing. This was announced on August 5 by the general director of the carrier Mesfin Taseu during a press conference.

Earlier, the media reported on an alleged meeting of the Russian delegation, headed by trade representative Yaroslav Tarasyuk, with representatives of the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA). It was clarified that the purpose of the meeting was to offer "wet" leasing of Ethiopian Airlines aircraft, allowing airlines to lease aircraft from each other along with the crew.

According to the Addis Standard newspaper, the corresponding agreement would allow air carriers from the Russian Federation to operate foreign-made aircraft registered in Ethiopia. It is noted that in this case, maintenance, crew and insurance would be provided by Ethiopian Airlines.

"There is no such agreement. These reports are absolutely false," Tass quoted the Addis Standard as saying.

The CEO ruled out leasing the aircraft due to the inopportune timing amid the need for more aircraft in Ethiopia. In particular, Taseu stressed that Ethiopian Airlines complies with the laws of each country in which it operates.

Earlier, on March 15, it was reported that by the end of 2024, 345 aircraft were excluded from the registers of foreign countries, while 216 of the total aircraft were purchased for Russian airlines. It was noted that the re-registration was achieved through cooperation and work with foreign administrations to remove these aircraft from foreign registries.
