India believes that the duties imposed by the United States on Indian goods in connection with the country's purchase of oil and petroleum products from Russia are an unfair and unwise step. This was announced on August 6 by Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal.

He noted that India has already outlined its position on these issues. The country's authorities explained that oil imports are based on market factors and are carried out to ensure the energy security of 1.4 billion residents.

"Therefore, it is extremely regrettable that the United States has decided to impose additional duties against India for actions that a number of other countries are also taking in their national interests. These actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable," Jaiswal said in a statement on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

He stressed that India will take all necessary measures to protect its national interests.

On August 6, US President Donald Trump signed a decree imposing an additional 25% duty on imports from India. The White House clarified that this measure was introduced in connection with India's "direct or indirect" import of petroleum products from the Russian Federation.

Prior to that, on August 4, the American leader warned that he would significantly increase duties on India due to imports of Russian oil. He stated that the country sells most of it on the open market, making huge profits. On the same day, it was reported that India and Brazil refused to stop buying oil from Russia, despite threats from Trump.
