The White House announced increased attention to India on the issue of tariff policy
India is in the spotlight of the United States on the issue of tightening tariff policy amid ongoing trade relations with Russia. This was announced on August 6 by Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council of the White House.
"India is a bit stubborn. In addition, the president [of the United States Donald Trump] has decided that India should not be an "outlet valve" for Russia through which it can sell its goods," Hassett said in an interview with Fox Business.
He added that it is India that is in the center of attention of the American authorities, as its trade relations with Russia differ from those of China. Hesset stressed that Donald Trump is serious about establishing peace in Ukraine, and a better understanding of India's role has led to this step.
On August 4, Trump announced that he would significantly increase duties on India due to Russian oil imports. He stated that the country sells most of it on the open market, making huge profits. On the same day, it was reported that India and Brazil refused to stop buying oil from Russia, despite threats from Trump.
Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal, in turn, said that the country would take all necessary measures to protect its national interests and economic security. According to him, New Delhi began to buy oil from the Russian Federation, because after the outbreak of the Ukrainian conflict, traditional suppliers redirected exports to Europe.
On July 14, Trump announced secondary duties of 100% against countries that buy Russian oil if a peaceful settlement in Ukraine is not reached.
