First Deputy Hutsul called on Gagauzia to disobey the Moldovan authorities
The first deputy chairman of the executive committee of Gagauzia, Ilya Uzun, acting bashkan (head) of the autonomy, called for disobedience to the Moldovan authorities after the detention of the head of the autonomy, Evgenia Gutsul. He made the corresponding statement on August 6 during an emergency meeting of the People's Assembly of Gagauzia.
"The Action and Solidarity party purposefully decapitated Gagauzia, dealing a blow to the Bashkan institute. We must unite and express civil disobedience to the current government," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.
According to him, the protests should be peaceful, and the region will seek support from international structures and defend the principles of genuine democracy, in which there is no place for dictatorship.
Following the meeting, the Parliament of Gagauzia adopted a resolution in defense of the Hutsuls. Vice Speaker Giorgi Leychu also expressed the opinion that the verdict was passed with the approval of European supervisors.
"Therefore, it should not be surprising that the residents of Gagauzia vote against European integration," he added.
Earlier, on August 5, Hutsul was sentenced to seven years in prison in the case of allegedly financing the Shor party. A protest rally was held in front of the courthouse in her support. The head of Gagauzia expressed great support from the people of the autonomy and urged "not to give up."
Hutsul's lawyer Natalia Bayram stressed that until the verdict comes into force, Bashkan will be held in a penitentiary, which has long been famous for the terrible conditions of detention of convicts. She also noted that the politician intends to fight resolutely and to the end for the post of head of Gagauzia, to defend her innocence and the citizens who voted for her.
