The scientist named the causes of temporary hearing loss after loud noises.
Hearing loss after listening to loud noises is usually temporary. Why this happens is stated in a study presented in the journal Science Daily, which was reviewed on August 8 by Izvestia.
"Most people experience hearing loss or temporary numbness of the ear after listening to loud noises. After that, hearing is usually restored. We have established that the tectorial membrane in the cochlea plays a key role in this process, being a kind of storage for calcium ions. These ions help regulate the work of sensory cells," said Anders Friedberger, head of research at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine.
Previous studies have found that the fluid surrounding sensory cells has a low concentration of calcium. However, the results of new experiments have shown that the membrane covering these cells, the tectorial membrane, has a much higher concentration of calcium ions than previously thought. These ions function as a kind of calcium storage, which allows cells to function in higher concentrations than previously thought.
In an experiment on guinea pigs, whose inner ear resembles a human's, scientists labeled calcium ions with a fluorescent substance. This allowed them to prove that the tectorial membrane is the main repository for these ions. When the scientists removed the calcium, the sensory cells stopped functioning. Later, when exposed to loud noise in the inner ear, as at a rock concert, the effect turned out to be similar.
"When we expose the inner ear to loud noise, the calcium level in the tectorial membrane decreases and sensory cells stop functioning. However, after a while, the calcium level returns to its previous state and the cells start working again," Friedberger added.
On March 6, Zarina Kurachinova, chief physician of the federal network of eye clinics World Vision Clinic, told Izvestia about the causes of glaucoma and its symptoms. She cited genetics, high intraocular pressure, vascular problems and stress as the main reasons. If you have iridescent circles in front of your eyes, periodic blurring of the image, a sharp deterioration in vision in the dark and headaches, you should consult an ophthalmologist.
