Gagauzia called the Hutsul verdict a national mourning for Moldova
The day when the guilty verdict was handed down to the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, became a national mourning for Moldova. This was announced on August 6 by Yuri Kuznetsov, Deputy head of the autonomy's external relations department.
"Unfortunately, yesterday the Republic of Moldova experienced a day of mourning. Two innocent women were convicted and are now in prison. We are continuing our support campaigns. Evgenia Gutsul and Svetlana Popan (activist of the opposition bloc "Victory". They are not to blame for anything," the politician said at a protest rally in Chisinau.
He stressed that Hutsul is the legitimately elected Bashkan of Gagauzia. Like Popan, she shouldn't be in prison, but with her family.
An action in support of Hutsul and Popan took place in Chisinau. According to Yuri Vitnyansky, a representative of the Pobeda bloc, such actions occur spontaneously. He expressed the opinion that residents who disagree with the decision will protest outside the prison for many more days to support Hutsul.
On August 5, Hutsul was sentenced to seven years in prison for allegedly financing the Shor party. A protest rally was held in front of the courthouse in her support. The head of Gagauzia expressed great support from the people of the autonomy and urged "not to give up." Ilan Shor, the leader of the Pobeda opposition bloc, called her arrest political terrorism.
Natalia Bayram, the lawyer of the head of Gagauzia, stressed that until the verdict comes into force, Hutsul will be in a penitentiary, which has long been famous for the terrible conditions of detention of convicts. She also stressed that the politician intends to resolutely fight for the position of bashkan to the end, to defend her innocence and the citizens who voted for her.
