The psychologist explained the reasons for nighttime conversations in a dream
Talking in a dream is a common phenomenon that can include both incoherent phrases and logical dialogues. This is stated in the material published in the journal Popular Science, which Izvestia reviewed on August 7.
Psychologist and author of The Sleep Committee, Deirdre Barrett, found that the content of late-night conversations differs significantly from speech in the waking state, often including words about anger, body functions, food and sex.
"Sleep speech contains more negative emotions and swear words than daytime speech," Barrett notes.
According to her, in most cases, "sleepers are not very connected to reality" and their statements often do not contain anything sensual or explicit.
As for the reasons why people talk in their sleep, they may be related to the dreams themselves. In the slow-wave sleep phase, dialogues are usually short and unintelligible, while in the REM phase they are more coherent and meaningful.
According to the publication, sleep talking is more common in people with sleep disorders, as well as those who experience stress or lack of sleep. Drinking alcohol can also increase the likelihood of late-night conversations.
"Talking in your sleep is just a glitch in the transitions between sleep stages," Barrett concludes.
She clarified that this failure is not an anxiety disorder, unless it leads to frequent disruptions or awakenings of partners. If conversations become regular and interfere with the quality of sleep, you can seek help from specialists.
Expert Maria Molostvova spoke on July 21 about the impact of sleep quality on brain health. She noted that chronic sleep disorders can cause serious harm to brain function, including an increased risk of cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases.
