The UN called the verdict against the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, accused of allegedly financing the opposition Shor party, an internal matter of Moldova. This was stated on August 5 at a briefing by the Deputy official representative of the UN Secretary-General, Farhan Haq.

"I believe this is a matter of the internal judicial system," the TASS news agency quoted Haq as saying.

Earlier that day, Hutsul was sentenced to seven years in prison for allegedly financing the Shor party. A protest rally was held in front of the courthouse in her support. The head of Gagauzia expressed great support from the people of the autonomy and urged "not to give up."

Natalia Bayram, the lawyer of the head of Gagauzia, stressed that until the verdict comes into force, Hutsul will be in a penitentiary, which has long been famous for the terrible conditions of detention of convicts. She also stressed that the politician intends to resolutely fight for the position of bashkan to the end, to defend her innocence and the citizens who voted for her.

On the same day, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, called on international structures to assess the Hutsul verdict. She noted that the actions of the Chisinau authorities are aimed at "diluting autonomy" and are a manifestation of a "police state."
