Trump proposed taking Washington under federal control due to rising crime
US President Donald Trump has proposed bringing Washington under federal control to combat growing crime. He posted a corresponding statement on his Truth Social network on April 5.
"Crime in Washington, DC is completely out of control. Local "teenagers" and gang members, some of whom are only 14, 15 and 16 years old, indiscriminately attack, rob, maim and shoot innocent citizens, knowing at the same time that they will be released almost immediately," the head of state said.
He noted that many criminals are confident of their impunity due to their young age. In this regard, Trump proposed changing the law and prosecuting juvenile offenders as adults, sending them to prison "for long periods" starting at the age of 14.
"If the District of Columbia does not get down to business, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take the city under federal control and govern it as it should be, and make it clear to criminals that they will no longer be able to escape punishment. Perhaps it should have been done a long time ago," the American leader pointed out.
On July 24, Bloomberg reported that Trump had signed an executive order to combat the homeless and criminals. It is also emphasized that the White House will provide grants to states that monitor violations of laws, such as sexual violence, illegal drug use, and urban campgrounds.
