Colombian President accuses Peru of appropriating Colombian islands
On August 5, Colombian President Gustavo Petro said that the Government of Peru had violated an international treaty and occupied territories that, according to the agreement, should belong to Colombia.
"The Peruvian government has recaptured the territory belonging to Colombia and violated the Rio Protocol," Petro wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
The Colombian president said that the 1934 agreement that ended the armed conflict defines the border at the deepest point of the Amazon. According to him, Peru tried to appropriate the islands that appeared north of this line by passing a law and placing the capital of the municipality there — on the territory that belongs to Colombia under the treaty.
The president also said that such actions could lead to the disappearance of Leticia as an Amazonian port and deprive it of trade. He noted that diplomatic measures will be used to protect national sovereignty.
Earlier, in July, a territorial dispute caused a military clash between Thailand and Cambodia. The military of both sides accused each other of firing the first shots and attacked each other's territories several times. In the end, on July 28, Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Phum Tham Vechayachai and Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Maneta agreed to a cease-fire at talks in Kuala Lumpur.
