The Lithuanian authorities have submitted a request to the leadership of the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) to deploy systems in the country to counter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This was reported on August 5 by the France 24 portal.

Defense Minister Dovile Shakalene and Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kastutis Budris have sent a letter to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

"We are asking for the deployment of additional anti-drone weapons, even if they are experimental systems. In changing circumstances, we are ready to try them out," Shakalene said.

The reason for this was the arrival of two UAVs on the territory of Lithuania from Belarus during July. Both devices fell without causing any accidents.

Before that, on July 29, the Minister of Defense stated that Lithuania was considering the possibility of closing certain sections of the airspace. This could make it possible to neutralize drones that violated airspace in closed areas and not create stress for civil aviation pilots, the portal said. Alfa.lt .

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said on July 26 that he was ready to support the initiative of the Baltic states — Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania — to increase defense spending to 5% of gross domestic product (GDP). Hegseth noted that there is a high probability of creating strong relations between the NATO countries and the Baltic states.
