Former Romanian President Ion Iliescu has died.
Former Romanian President Ion Iliescu has died at the age of 95. This was announced on August 5 by the government of the country on its website.
"The Government is deeply saddened to announce the death of the former Romanian President, Mr. Ion Iliescu. The former head of the Romanian state died today, August 5, 2025, at the Clinical Hospital of Emergency Medicine named after Professor Dr. Agrippa Ionescu," the statement said.
The Romanian Government expressed its condolences to the family and friends of Iliescu. It is specified that information on the schedule of the state funeral of the former president will appear later in due course.
Ion Iliescu has served as head of the Romanian state twice in history: from 1990 to 1996 and from 2000 to 2004. He became the first Romanian president after the overthrow of the Nicolae Ceausescu regime.
