- The media learned about India's dispatch of a security adviser to Russia amid Trump's threats
Ajit Dowal, National Security Adviser to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, arrived in Moscow amid statements by US President Donald Trump about a significant increase in duties for India. This was reported by The Times of India on August 5.
"His [Doval's] visit is aimed at strengthening India's strategic partnership with Russia in the face of growing global tensions. <...> Trump's warnings will not undermine Indian-Russian relations. The [Indian] government has clearly stated its refusal to submit to pressure in connection with energy trade with Moscow," the article says.
The Indian newspaper The Economic Times clarifies that the visit was planned in advance. The Indian delegation is expected to be of a "high level."
According to the newspaper, Dowal will hold talks with Russia on expanding cooperation in the defense industry, including the potential purchase of more S-400 missile systems and maintenance infrastructure in India. Vladimir Putin's potential visit to New Delhi will also be discussed.
The Economic Times added that Dowal's visit to Moscow will be followed by Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, who is expected to travel to Russia later this month. His meetings will focus on stimulating Indian exports, cooperation in the Arctic and cooperation in the field of civil nuclear energy. Negotiations with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov are also on the agenda.
On August 4, Trump announced that he would significantly increase duties on India due to Russian oil imports. He stated that the country sells most of it on the open market, making huge profits. In his opinion, New Delhi is not concerned about the situation in the conflict in Ukraine.
Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal, in turn, said that the country would take all necessary measures to protect its national interests and economic security. According to him, New Delhi began to buy oil from the Russian Federation, because after the outbreak of the Ukrainian conflict, traditional suppliers redirected exports to Europe. He noted that at that time the States encouraged such purchases in India.
Later, on August 5, Donald Trump announced that Washington intends to "very significantly" increase duties on India for its purchase of Russian oil within 24 hours. In a conversation with reporters, the American leader called India not a very good partner, since New Delhi does a lot of business with Washington, and Washington "does not do business with them."
