Russia and Turkmenistan are united by historical ties, and the countries' relations are in the nature of a strategic partnership. This was announced on August 5 by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev during a working trip to the republic.

"Russia and Turkmenistan are united by close historical ties based on mutual trust, common values and cultural traditions. The cooperation between the two countries is at a high level and has the character of a strategic partnership. This has a positive effect on trade and economic relations. The trade turnover between our countries has increased by almost a third this year. We hope for further development of relations in the spirit of mutual respect in order to strengthen fruitful cooperation," he said during a meeting with the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty (People's Council) of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

Patrushev also met with President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov. The main topics of discussion were the development of trade and economic cooperation between the two countries and joint efforts to preserve the Caspian Sea.

"On behalf of the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, we are preparing a comprehensive program to study changes in the level of the Caspian Sea. However, shallowing is a major challenge for all five coastal States. And, as the results of the Third Caspian Economic Forum have shown, we are united in understanding the scale of the problem and the need for coordinated action. In this regard, we propose to launch a multilateral cooperation mechanism that will allow us to develop common standards and approaches to studying fluctuations in the Caspian Sea," Patrushev stressed.

The Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation noted that an important component of mutual trade is agricultural products, which also show positive dynamics. At the same time, Russia is ready to increase supplies of food and mineral fertilizers.

Patrushev also pointed out the prospects for the development of cooperation between the two countries in the field of ecology and environmental protection. The Deputy Prime Minister noted that Moscow is ready to build a dialogue in a wide range of areas. First of all, this concerns the preservation of the Caspian Sea. Russia is also interested in developing relations with Turkmenistan in the field of geology and subsoil use.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on May 16. The Kremlin clarified that during the dialogue, prospects for the development of a mutually beneficial strategic partnership between the Russian Federation and Turkmenistan were discussed.
