- Trump threatened the EU with an increase in import duties to 35% for lack of investment
The United States may raise import duties for the European Union (EU) to 35% for non-fulfillment of obligations on investments in the US economy. This was announced on August 5 by American President Donald Trump on CNBC.
"Then they will pay duties of 35%," Trump said, answering a question about measures taken by the United States for non—fulfillment of EU investment obligations.
He added that the United States has reduced tariffs for the European Union from 30% to 15% for the sake of investments of $ 600 billion. Trump called this amount a "gift."
"This is not a loan that is issued for three years in advance, and we must repay the money. We have nothing to pay for. They gave us $600 billion, which we can invest in anything we want," the American leader concluded.
Donald Trump announced a trade deal with the European Union on July 27. According to Bloomberg, the agreement will allow the EU to avoid the 30 percent tariffs that Washington could impose. It is specified that, in turn, the EU agreed to purchase $750 billion worth of American energy resources and invest another $600 billion in the United States economy.
According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the US-EU trade agreement will lead to the further deindustrialization of Europe. He noted that Europe plans to spend $750 billion on the purchase of American energy resources, in particular liquefied natural gas (LNG) and nuclear energy due to the "complete decoupling" of energy purchases from Russia.
