Washington intends to increase duties on India "very significantly" during the day for its purchase of Russian oil. The upcoming decision was announced on August 5 by US President Donald Trump.

In a conversation with reporters, the American leader called India "not a very good partner," as New Delhi does a lot of business with Washington, which "does not do business with them."

"We have set [duties] at 25%, but I think I will raise them significantly in the next 24 hours because they are buying Russian oil and supporting the military machine. If they do this, I will not be happy," he said in an interview with CNBC.

On August 4, Trump announced that he would significantly increase duties on India due to Russian oil imports. He stated that the country sells most of it on the open market, making huge profits. In his opinion, New Delhi is not concerned about the situation in the conflict in Ukraine.

Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal, in turn, said that the country would take all necessary measures to protect its national interests and economic security. According to him, New Delhi began to buy oil from the Russian Federation, because after the outbreak of the Ukrainian conflict, traditional suppliers redirected exports to Europe. He noted that then the States encouraged such purchases in India.

Later, on August 5, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov pointed out the right of sovereign countries to choose their own economic cooperation partners, despite the threat of sanctions against them.
