- The owner of a funeral home in the United States accumulated almost 200 bodies and sent dry concrete to families.
Carey Hallford, the owner of the Return to Nature funeral home, has been storing almost 200 human bodies in improper conditions for several years and handing over dry concrete to the relatives of the victims. This was announced on August 5 by NBC.
According to the materials of the federal case, instead of cremation, for which clients paid in advance, Hallford stored the bodies, and handed over dry concrete to the relatives of the victims. In total, as the investigation found, she embezzled about $ 130 thousand intended for funeral services.
The prosecutor's office also found that the woman, along with her husband John Hallford, falsified documents in order to receive almost $900,000 from the US Small Business Administration during the pandemic. According to investigators, there were accumulations of liquids, swarms of insects and larvae in the room where the bodies were found.
"We still don't know the truth about what they did to us," said Kristina Page, the mother of one of the victims, whose body had lain in the building for four years.
Carey Hallford pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to defraud, and faces up to 20 years in prison. The case of 191 episodes of abuse of bodies is being considered in parallel in the state court. Hallford is scheduled to be sentenced in December.
Earlier, on June 30, the prosecutor of the state of Chihuahua in northern Mexico, Cesara Jauregui Moreno, announced the discovery of the remains of 381 people in an abandoned crematorium. It was noted that previously the crematorium had not burned the bodies, and sent the ashes of another person to the relatives of the deceased. The company's owner and one of the employees were arrested.
