German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held several "tough" telephone conversations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about ending the conflict in the Gaza Strip. This was reported on August 5 by The New York Times (NYT), citing sources.

"Although Merz publicly supports Israel, he, according to a senior German official, had several harsh, even angry telephone conversations with Netanyahu," the publication notes.

According to the NYT, the German Chancellor called on the Israeli Prime Minister to reach a cease-fire agreement in Gaza and allow more humanitarian aid to be delivered to the enclave.

It is noted that due to the difficult humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, Merz found himself in an "awkward position" because of Israel's support. According to the newspaper, Berlin is under increasing pressure to take tough measures against Tel Aviv.

Focus magazine reported on July 30 that Germany has recently received over a thousand statements against Merz for his position on the conflict in the Gaza Strip. It was clarified that citizens express dissatisfaction with Germany's role in the Middle East conflict and the humanitarian situation in the enclave.
