After the earthquake, Kamchatka not only shifted by 2 m, but also decreased slightly in height, but it is not worth expecting any new serious consequences. On August 5, the director of the Kamchatka branch of the United Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Danila Chebrov, told Izvestia about this.

"The shift is precisely the result of a powerful earthquake. Therefore, nothing additional can happen there, except what will happen during the aftershock process. And the seismic process in Kamchatka did not stop by itself," the expert concluded.

He noted that the peninsula is in motion all the time, as the lithospheric plates are moving.

"Kamchatka has dropped a little bit. There is less in the Petropavlovsk [-Kamchatsky] area, and more in the south. Kamchatka is located on the North American Plate. It also moves, it is pushed by the oceanic plate, then it plays back a little, then again, and so on," Chebrov explained.

The expert added that most often such tectonic shifts that occur during earthquakes may not be noticed.

"An earthquake is accompanied not only by such shaking, which everyone really likes and remembers, but also by such slow movements, which are very large in amplitude, but they are completely impossible to feel and record without precise instruments," the expert noted.

The Kamchatka branch of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) reported earlier that day that after a powerful earthquake, the southern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula had shifted by almost 2 m. They noted that this displacement is comparable to the horizontal displacement after the earthquake in Tohoku, Japan, in 2011.

The earthquake in Kamchatka occurred on July 30. A tsunami threat has been declared on the coast of the Avacha Bay due to a strong earthquake. As a result of a seismic event in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the wall of one of the kindergartens collapsed.

This was followed by a series of aftershocks. On August 4, RAS specialists reported that seven significant earthquakes were recorded in Kamchatka during the day. It was clarified that more than 85 seismic events were registered in Kamchatka in just one day.
