The immediate payment of benefits to Ukrainian refugees undermined the German citizens' approval of the concept of social assistance. This was announced on August 5 by the head of the Sarah Wagenknecht Union party, Sarah Wagenknecht.

"A strong welfare state means that not everyone can immigrate to it. By granting refugees — and in the case of Ukrainians, even immediately — the same rights as people who have worked and paid taxes for decades, public confidence in the civil benefits system is being undermined," Wagenknecht wrote on the social network.

She stressed that currently, those who depend on them and already live in poverty are suffering from the debate about reducing benefits. In particular, single parents who, due to lack of places in kindergartens, cannot get a full-time job. They are also elderly people who, for health reasons, cannot continue to work in their former place and are "desperately looking for a new one."

Wagenknecht also attributed the category of industrial workers who lost their jobs due to "failed economic policies" to the most vulnerable.

"Especially those who have been paying insurance premiums regularly for many years deserve more reliable protection — for example, by restoring unemployment benefits, the amount of which takes into account the previous income level," she concluded.

On August 3, the leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU), Markus Zeder, called for the complete abolition of unemployment benefits to Ukrainian refugees in Germany. The CSU chairman added that he wants to put the proposal up for discussion in the country's ruling coalition.
