The trade deal between the United States and the European Union (EU) was concluded under pressure from Washington. This was announced on August 5 by former European Commissioner for Internal Market Affairs Thierry Breton.

"The stage has come for the whole world where the President of the United States [Donald Trump] is imposing — there are no other words — customs duties on all countries of the world so that they can trade with the United States only in the interests of the United States," he said on the Franceinfo YouTube channel.

Breton added that the trade deal is actually a demand put forward by the United States, which the EU has not been able to refuse.

German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said on August 4 that the EU had shown weakness in trade negotiations with the United States and had received unsatisfactory trade conditions. He added that the European Union must become stronger in order to be able to negotiate on equal terms with the United States.

The United States and the EU agreed on a trade deal on July 27. European countries remain with 15 percent tariffs on most of their exports, including cars. In addition, the EU agreed to purchase $750 billion worth of American energy resources and invest another $600 billion in the US economy.
