Sovereign countries have the right to choose economic cooperation partners, despite the threat of sanctions against them. This was announced on August 5 by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

"We hear a lot of statements that are actually threats. Attempts to force countries to end trade relations with Russia. We do not consider such statements legitimate," he said at a briefing, commenting on US demands to stop purchases of Russian oil by India.
