U.S. Secretary of Transportation and Acting Director of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Sean Duffy intends to announce plans to accelerate the program for the construction of a nuclear reactor on the Moon. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on August 4, citing sources.

This week, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy will announce accelerated plans to build a nuclear reactor on the moon.

It is noted that by 2030 it is planned to launch a nuclear reactor with a capacity of 100 kilowatts, which is a key factor for the return of astronauts to the surface of the Moon.

Also, according to the newspaper, Duffy proposed a directive on a faster replacement of the International Space Station.

It is noted that this plan is related to the second space race, namely, reaching the Moon and Mars ahead of Russia and China.

Earlier, on July 31, Dmitry Bakanov, head of the Roscosmos state corporation, and Duffy discussed cooperation between Russia and the United States on lunar programs and joint space exploration. The parties also discussed the future work of the International Space Station (ISS), as well as cooperation on a number of other space projects.
