Over a thousand scientists demanded that CERN abandon cooperation with Israel
More than 1,000 scientists have circulated a petition to the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), calling for a review of cooperation with Israel against the background of the situation in Gaza. This was reported on August 4 by the Swiss newspaper Tribune de Geneve.
"The petition calls on the CERN Council, the highest body comprising its member states, to review cooperation with Israel and its alignment with the values of this institution in light of the numerous violations committed by this state in Gaza," the article says.
At the same time, we are not talking about Israel's permanent exclusion from CERN, as it has been one of the institute's 25 member states since 2014.
At the same time, on August 1, a group of Geneva residents removed and threw into the trash the Israeli flag hanging on the organization's building in the city. CERN reported the incident to the police.
"Our action was peaceful, we acted with an open face, because, as residents of Geneva, we believe that CERN represents important values for our city. He must stop any cooperation with Israel," a participant in the rally told the media.
Earlier on August 4, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pointed out to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer the importance of measures to force Israel to cease fire in the Gaza Strip. He noted that Turkey is constantly sending humanitarian aid to Gaza and supports efforts to achieve a ceasefire in the region.
In Sydney on August 3, tens of thousands of demonstrators marched across the Harbor Bridge as part of a pro-Palestinian march calling for an end to the conflict and a solution to the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Up to 90,000 people took part in the demonstration. Some participants in the march, called the "March for Humanity," carried pots and pans, symbolizing the problem of hunger.
