- Hungary accused Ukraine of trying to hide the death of a Hungarian during mobilization
The State Bureau of Investigation of Ukraine will not launch an investigation into the death of Transcarpathian Hungarian Jozsef Szebestien, who died at the hands of employees of the territorial recruitment center (TCC, the Ukrainian equivalent of the military enlistment office). This was reported on August 4 by the Hungarian newspaper Magyar Nemzet.
"The agency refers to the fact that, in their opinion, there is not enough data to carry out the procedure, there is not enough evidence to start an investigation. The family also informed our newspaper that they would not make [such a] decision, they would appeal," the article says.
The newspaper noted that the Ukrainian authorities want to hide the case of the Hungarian's death in Beregovo. According to Magyar Nemzet, the Ukrainian side has denied the incident all this time, although the story of Jozsef Szebestien and his family, videos and photographs have been made public.
The newspaper recalled that the report published by the Council of Europe in mid-July also recognizes that abuses committed by Ukrainian recruiting officers have become systematic and widespread. The document lists in detail the types of violations: physical violence, unjustified arrests, denial of access to a lawyer, isolated detention and forced mobilization of people with disabilities.
"Jozsef Szebestien became a victim of forced conscription," the article says.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on July 17 that the country had demanded that the EU impose sanctions against three employees of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine for the death of Hungarian citizen Jozsef Szebestien during forced conscription in Transcarpathia.
On the same day, the head of the Hungarian government's administration, Gergei Gulyash, announced Hungary's intention to ban the entry into the country of three Ukrainian militants responsible for the death of Chebestien. Gulyash noted that this problem is not unique. He also added that the Ukrainian government in Budapest had not given an explanation for what had happened, and the conversation with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on this topic "should not be initiated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban."
