The case of a wanted mercenary from Georgia has been sent to the DPR court.

The criminal case against Aleko Elisashvili, a 47-year-old mercenary from Georgia who fought on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), has been sent to the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR). This was announced on August 4 by the regional prosecutor's office.

According to the investigation, in March 2022, Elisashvili arrived in Ukraine through a Polish border checkpoint and joined the Georgian National Legion, part of the 25th Territorial Defense Battalion of the Kiev region. He was trained at training bases, where he studied the handling of weapons, strategy and tactics of combat. Then he took part in military operations against Russian military personnel, including in the area of the city of Irpen, Kiev region.

"Elisashvili took part in military operations against members of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine, including in the battles for the city of Irpen in the Kiev region. In April 2022, he left the territory of Ukraine and returned to Georgia," the statement said.

Elisashvili is charged under Part 3 of Article 359 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Participation of a mercenary in an armed conflict"). He was arrested in absentia and put on the international wanted list.

On July 29, the DPR Supreme Court sentenced 37-year-old US citizen Andrew Richard Brent, who participated in military operations on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, to 14 years in prison in absentia. According to investigators, in 2023, Brent arrived in Ukraine through Poland, where he voluntarily joined the 4th Battalion of the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine as a mercenary.
