Constitutional Commission of the Riigikogu (Parliament) Estonia has supported the re-submission of unchanged amendments to the law, which may lead to the ban of the Estonian Orthodox Christian Church (EHRC). This was announced on August 4 by the Chairman of the parliamentary Commission, Ando Kiviberg.

"The purpose of this bill has been pretty clear and unambiguous from the very beginning. Given the changed situation in the world and taking into account where Estonia is located and under what influence we have been in recent years, we have no other choice," he said in an interview with ERR television.

Kiviberg also stressed the need to establish clear rules for any kind of influence activity, regardless of "what kind of cover it is carried out under." He added that in this case, national security considerations significantly outweighed the right of people "to do anything under the pretext of religious freedom."

Earlier, on April 9, the Estonian parliament approved a law obliging to sever ties with the Moscow Patriarch. It was noted that the law essentially prohibits the EPCC, and therefore it must sever ties with Moscow and prepare for trial. On April 24, President Alar Karis did not approve amendments to this law.

After that, on June 18, the Riigikogu adopted the final reading of amendments to the law against the EHRC. 68 deputies supported the adoption of the new version, 17 people opposed it.
