- The media pointed to the risks of the EU becoming an "energy colony" of the United States
The European Union (EU) is at risk of becoming an "energy colony" of the United States after the trade agreement. This was reported on August 4 by the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia.
"The fine print is the most questionable. According to the general opinion, the European Union risks becoming an energy colony of the United States," the publication says.
According to the newspaper, in order to fulfill its obligations, Europe must spend $750 billion over three years to purchase oil, liquefied natural gas and coal from the American side. It is noted that this is almost 70% of the imported energy from the country.
The European Union and the United States agreed on a trade deal on July 27. The agreement will allow the bloc to avoid the 30 percent tariffs that could be imposed by Washington. As a result of the deal, the EU remains with 15 percent tariffs on most of its exports, including cars. In turn, Bloomberg columnist Simon Nixon said that the trade agreement between the United States and the EU is an extremely unfavorable deal for Brussels.
