- The political scientist pointed out the consequences for Switzerland in the trade standoff with the United States.
The tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on Switzerland at 39% could have a significant impact on the country's economy. Malek Dudakov, an American political scientist, told Izvestia on August 4.
"Switzerland turned out to be one of the main losers in the second stage of the Trump trade standoff, because they hoped to secure favorable terms of 10-15%. This did not happen, Trump has already imposed very, very harsh tariffs of 39%. This will affect both the Swiss industry and pharmacology, given that Switzerland exports medicines worth tens of billions of dollars annually to the American market," the expert said.
Dudakov also stressed that the introduction of 39% tariffs would negatively affect the Swiss watch market, which plays an important role in the country's economy.
In addition, the political scientist added that the consequences will be very serious if Switzerland fails to quickly reach an alternative agreement with the United States.
"Switzerland does have a pretty serious trade deficit with the Americans: there is about $40 billion a year, but it is not entirely clear how to close it. The Swiss also wanted to promise some big investments in the American economy, but apparently they didn't have time or couldn't agree on all this," the political scientist added.
In addition, the expert suggested that Switzerland's status as a rich country may be one of the reasons for the rigidity of Trump's tariff policy. Dudakov noted that the country will have to exist for some time under the pressure of high tariffs from the United States before any agreements can be reached.
Earlier in the day, Trump imposed additional duties on imported goods from the EU and more than 60 foreign countries. Thus, the highest tariffs were imposed on goods from Laos, Myanmar (40% each) and Syria (41%). Also, goods from countries that have not concluded an agreement with the United States are subject to a duty of 10%.
