People's Artist of the USSR, film director Eldar Shengelaya died at the age of 93 in Georgia. This was announced on August 4 by the Nato Vachnadze Foundation on Facebook (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

"We regret to inform you that Eldar Shengelaya has passed away," the message says.

Shengelaya was born on January 26, 1933 in Tbilisi. In 1958, he graduated from the directing department of VGIK. Then the artist worked at the Mosfilm studios, and in 1960 at Georgia-Film. He participated in the creation of such films as "The Legend of the Icy Heart", "The White Caravan", "Oddballs", "Samanishvili's Stepmother", "An Extraordinary Exhibition" and "Blue Mountains, or an Incredible Story".

In addition, the director was a laureate of the USSR State Prize and the Shota Rustaveli State Prize of Georgia. Also in 2018, Shengelaya was awarded the Nika Award for the best film of the CIS and Baltic countries for the picture "Armchair".
