- The cat rescued in St. Petersburg will have a long adaptation to new living conditions
A cat stuck in an opening between granite cladding on the Fontanka River embankment in St. Petersburg was taken to a veterinary clinic. On August 3, animal rights activists in charge of the rescued animal told Izvestia that it would take a long time to adapt to new living conditions.
"The cat is very emaciated, the weight barely exceeds 2.5 kg. Beaten by numerous fights, one of the bleeding wounds was operated on successfully. <...> Long—term adaptation to new living conditions after being imprisoned by the water is required," said Leonid Lunev, head of the animal rescue service Extremum.
According to him, no more surgical interventions are planned, but the animal will need a long-term adaptation to new living conditions after a long imprisonment by the water. The activists clarified that after the examination, the cat will go to overexposure, where he will live until a new home is found for him.
Later, the curators found out that the wound was deeper than expected — the cat had a bone injury. The animal requires bandages and daily antibiotic injections to avoid surgical removal of part of the bone or the entire paw.
Earlier that day, the cat was rescued by volunteers from the Koshkispas animal Rescue service using a garrote and a glanders. The animal was placed in a cage and lifted onto dry land, and then handed over to veterinarians.
Rescuers and volunteers have been trying to free him for several days. The rescue situation was complicated by the fact that the cat was at a depth of four meters, and access to it was flooded with water. According to local residents, the animal spent about a week in "stone captivity".
