Poland extended border control with Germany and Lithuania for 60 days
Polish authorities have extended border controls at the borders with Germany and Lithuania for 60 days, until October 4. This was announced on August 3 by Interior Minister Marcin Kervinsky.
"The decision to extend border control at the Polish-German and Polish-Lithuanian borders has been made. <...> The enhanced operation of checkpoints will last until October 4," he said at an interdepartmental meeting on border control. The politician's words are quoted by Gazeta Prawna.
Kerwinski added that the "98 percent tightness" of the border on the Polish side would force illegal migration flows to be redirected to other sites. According to him, the adopted resolution was submitted to the European Commission (EC) for notification purposes.
"In September, we will decide on further steps in this direction based on data from the Border Guard Service, the army and the police," he concluded.
On July 24, Poland extended border control with Germany and Lithuania for 30 days. It is noted that this period was chosen due to the specifics of the provisions of the border code of the Schengen area, since it is for so many days that border control can be established by the first decision.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on July 1 that the country would introduce temporary border controls with Germany and Lithuania from July 7 due to the large number of migrants. He pointed out that Warsaw's patience with migration issues is "running out."
