- FT learned about the reduction of nuclear power plant capacity in Europe due to the heat
Nuclear power plants in Europe have been forced to reduce their capacity due to the heat wave in the region, and the European electrical system has been severely stressed due to a sharp increase in the use of air conditioners. This was reported on August 3 by the Financial Times newspaper.
"Europe's energy systems have been under severe strain this summer, as the heat wave has led to increased demand for electricity and forced factories to suspend production. June was the hottest on record in Western Europe, which led to an increase in the use of air conditioners and a sharp increase in electricity prices," the publication says.
The European Electric Power Industry Association Eurelectric reported that the total demand for electricity in the EU increased by 7.5% in two weeks due to the peak of the intense heat from June 23 to July 3 compared with the same period of the previous year, while in Spain there was an increase of 16% over the same period.
It is noted that domestic nuclear power plants in France and Switzerland temporarily suspended or reduced operations in early summer, as it is more difficult to cool the reactors in hot weather. British energy company SSE also reported that electricity generation at its hydroelectric power plants decreased by 40% by the end of June compared to the previous quarter, as Britain also faced extreme heat and severe drought.
On June 30, the newspaper El Tiempo reported that the heat in Spain had risen to historically record levels of +46 degrees. According to forecasters, temperatures will continue to rise in the north and northwest of the country, especially in the Cantabrian region and Galicia.
