- The Interior Ministry warned about a fraudulent scheme with deepfakes of bloggers when selling cars
Scammers began using deepfakes from well-known automotive experts or bloggers in order to deceive Russians when selling used vehicles. This was announced on August 3 by the press service of the Russian Interior Ministry.
"Scammers 'appropriate' the appearance and voice of existing, often well—known and reputable people (popular auto experts, bloggers or random people from social networks), whose integrity is beyond doubt, thereby creating the illusion of authenticity of the content," the agency said in a statement.
It is clarified that in the scheme, the attackers use the method of social engineering — they write that the price is valid only on that day, or they refer to the fake interest of others in the purchase. At the same time, they use fake scans of documents and force potential victims to lose their vigilance, leaving no time for rational data verification or doubt.
The Interior Ministry recommended to be more attentive and vigilant when carrying out transactions with money, urged to observe digital hygiene measures and be critical of "burning" offers, including on behalf of a famous person.
Earlier, on July 8, it was reported about a fraud scheme in which intruders use deepfakes to simulate calls on behalf of the heads of regions of the Russian Federation and other government representatives. It was clarified that criminals warn about an important conversation with law enforcement agencies and exert psychological pressure on Russians to subsequently steal their money.
