- WP reported on the US plans to destroy part of the stocks of humanitarian aid in warehouses
The American authorities are considering the possibility of disposing of large volumes of humanitarian food aid from 60 thousand tons that were not sent abroad due to the curtailment of external programs. This was reported on August 1 by The Washington Post, citing documents from the State Department and representatives of humanitarian organizations.
According to an internal memorandum, more than 60,000 tons of food remain in warehouses in the United States and other countries. Previously, they were intended for regions in need, including Sudan. However, after the reduction of more than 80% of the programs of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), some of the products were considered expired, and the "destroy" label appeared on the boxes with the USAID logo.
According to the newspaper, there is peanut paste in the warehouse of the non-profit organization Mana Nutrition in Georgia, which is used to restore nutrition in malnourished children. The organization estimates that there would be enough food for tens of millions of people.
"This is a huge surplus. Everything is negotiated. Everything is bought and paid for. It's just that no one is taking it away," said Mana Nutrition Chief Operating Officer David Todd Harmon.
The publication notes that with the closure of the agency on July 1, the well-established mechanism for the supply of aid worth more than $ 1 billion per year was disrupted. The new plan, which is being discussed at the State Department, involves a partial redistribution of balances, but the exact amounts and timing are not given.
On July 1, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that USAID had decided to terminate foreign aid programs. According to him, now, under the Trump administration, the foreign financing mission in America will give priority to the national interests of the country.
The Atlantic reported on July 16 that the administration of US President Donald Trump ordered the burning of almost 500 tons of high-calorie cookies intended for children from Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Atlantic stressed that such measures are related to the suspension of the work of USAID.
