Senior Republican lawmakers have condemned US President Donald Trump's decision to fire Erica mcentarfer, head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, after a report showed that far fewer jobs were created in July than expected. This was reported on August 2 by The Guardian newspaper.

According to the newspaper, the dismissal of Mcentarfer, who was confirmed to her position in January 2024 during Joe Biden's presidency, alarmed members of Trump's own party.

"If the president fires a statistician because he doesn't like the numbers, but they're accurate, then that's a problem. It's not the fault of the statistician if the numbers are accurate and do not meet the president's expectations," said Republican Senator from Wyoming Cynthia Lummis.

In addition, Lammis called the dismissal of the head of the Bureau a "rather impulsive" step.

"If the president or someone else decided to fire the director simply because they didn't like the numbers, then they should grow up," said Republican Senator from North Carolina Thom Tillis.

On the same day, The New York Times reported that Trump decided to fire mcentarfer because he did not like the data on low labor market indicators published on August 1. Experts have already stated that this dismissal "will further undermine the credibility of government statistics."

On August 1, the Financial Times newspaper reported a sharp slowdown in the US labor market over the past three months. It was noted that "only 73,000 jobs were created in July in the world's largest economy." The publication clarified that the revision of the data for several months was caused by a reduction in government spending on personnel.
