The expert spoke about the dangers of using spirals to repel insects.
Mosquito coils, despite their outward simplicity, are chemically active and, if used improperly, they can cause harm not only to insects, but also to humans. This was announced on August 2 by Andrey Dorokhov, Associate Professor of the Department of Inorganic Chemistry named after A. N. Reformatsky RTU MIREA.
Modern insect repellent coils consist of wood flour, binders and insecticides, most often pyrethroids. These substances disrupt the functioning of sodium channels in the nervous system of insects, causing paralysis.
"However, pyrethroids are not strictly selective: when inhaled, they can have an irritating and neurotoxic effect on humans, especially with prolonged or regular exposure," the expert shared in an interview with Gazeta.Ru».
Spirals should not be used in enclosed spaces without ventilation – it is very dangerous. It is recommended to use them only outdoors or in well-ventilated areas.
"It is important to remember that the spiral should smolder, not burn. During active combustion, the destruction of insecticidal molecules occurs with the formation of by-products not provided for by technology.Gorenje Therefore, after igniting, it is necessary to extinguish the flame immediately," Dorokhov warned.
Contrary to popular misconception, the simultaneous use of several coils does not increase their protective effect proportionally. On the contrary, this only leads to an increase in the level of harmful substances in the air.
"It is especially dangerous to use multiple coils in calm weather or in an enclosed space where smoke does not disperse. This can lead to headaches, nausea, irritation of the mucous membranes and other symptoms of intoxication," said the chemist.
When buying mosquito coils, make sure that the package contains the name of the product, the composition, instructions for use and precautions. It is forbidden to buy spirals in dubious online stores, as they may contain substances prohibited for domestic use that have not passed certification.
On July 28, Ekaterina Dmitrenko, a doctor, spoke about how to act correctly when a wasp stings. She noted that wasps don't leave stings, so there's no need to pull anything out.
