The trial of Gagauzian bashkan Evgenia Gutsul will largely determine the fate of Moldova for years to come. This was announced on August 1 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, whose statement was published on the official website of the ministry.

"Without a doubt, this trial will largely determine the fate of Moldova for many years to come. I would like to believe that someday reason will prevail in Chisinau, and the Moldovan government will return to observing the law," the commentary says.

The diplomat stressed that an independent judiciary is the key to the normal operation of the country. In addition, she noted that Moldovan President Maia Sandu and her Western sponsors continue to rock the boat inside the country.

"Apparently, everyone in the West is satisfied with such a violation of fundamental democratic norms and principles, which has already become a hallmark of the M. G. Sandu regime," Zakharova added.

On July 17, the Chisinau Court of Appeal rejected the lawyers' petition and decided to keep the head of Gagauzia under house arrest. Hutsul's lawyer Natalia Bayram stressed that her detention under house arrest is "the height of lawlessness."

Zakharova said on July 9 that the trial against the Hutsuls in Moldova is a vivid example of lawlessness and the fight against dissent. According to her, as the parliamentary elections in Moldova approach, the policy of "tightening the screws" under the pretext of combating "fictional Russian propaganda" will only intensify.
