The Swiss government is shocked by US President Donald Trump's decision to impose a 39% import duty. This was reported on August 1 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper, citing sources.

"It is unclear what the United States wants from us. <...> The government is in a state of shock," the Swiss MP said.

The article clarifies that the new rate in Switzerland is even higher than the 31% that the American leader announced on "liberation day" in April. At the same time, a similar rate for Switzerland makes this country an exception in Europe: 10% duties are imposed on the UK, while 15% tariffs are imposed on the European Union (EU).

"Switzerland has maintained and continues to maintain contacts with the relevant US authorities. It continues to seek a negotiated solution in accordance with the law and its obligations under international law," the government said.

It is noted that Switzerland intends to analyze the new situation and decide on further steps to hold negotiations before August 7.

Earlier in the day, Trump imposed additional duties on imported goods from the EU and more than 60 foreign countries. Thus, the highest tariffs were imposed on goods from Laos, Myanmar (40% each) and Syria (41%). Also, goods from countries that have not concluded an agreement with the United States are subject to a duty of 10%.
