The summer months are traditionally associated with vacations, trips, and meetings with loved ones, but alcohol can endanger health and safety. This is stated in a publication on the risks of alcohol consumption in the warmer months, on the website of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Izvestia reviewed the study on August 3.

One of the main problems, according to experts, is the combination of heat and alcohol. As specified, hot summer days cause fluid loss through sweat, and alcohol increases dehydration due to its diuretic effect. This can quickly lead to heat stroke or severe dehydration.

Alcohol can also exacerbate concomitant conditions that often occur during travel: motion sickness, heat intolerance, and side effects from medications. It is noted that alcohol is able to interact with drugs that are taken specifically during travel, including for nausea and blood pressure. In addition, experts warn that people often drink more than usual on vacation.

"This can lead to higher concentrations of alcohol in the blood and increase the risk of accidents, especially if the drinks contain more alcohol than the person is used to," the publication says.

The influence of alcohol on driving behavior is emphasized separately. During the summer holidays, roads become especially dangerous due to holiday routes, trailers, and distractions in the car. Alcohol consumption can endanger not only the driver, but also all participants in the movement.

If you are organizing a party with alcohol, it is important to consider safety in advance. Experts recommend offering food and snacks, as food slows down the absorption of alcohol and reduces its concentration in the blood. It is useful to have alternative drinks such as water, juices and soft carbonated drinks, which not only quench thirst, but also slow down the effects of alcohol.

Alexander Umnov, a lecturer at the Department of Surgery at the Medical Faculty of the State University of Education, said on July 28 that alcohol can only be washed down with water without gas, as it is chemically neutral and does not alter the body's metabolism. According to the doctor, orange, grapefruit and similar juices compete with alcohol for enzymes in the liver.
