A tooth of a young mammoth was found during excavations in Nizhny Novgorod
The molar tooth of a young woolly mammoth was discovered by archaeologists in the Pochainsky ravine in the center of Nizhny Novgorod. This was announced on August 1 by the governor of the region Gleb Nikitin.
The find was discovered at a depth of about 2 m from the modern surface, closer to Rozhdestvenskaya Street. According to experts, this area is of significant interest for paleontological research.
According to Nikitin, studies show that mammoths lived in the Middle Volga region and began to disappear about 11 thousand years ago, during a period of dramatic climate warming and vegetation changes.
"Mammoth remains have already been found here: in the 1930s, the remains of a mammoth skull with two upper molars were unearthed at the foot of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin," the governor of the region recalled in his Telegram channel.
In December last year, the remains of a baby mammoth were found in Yakutia. The body length of the cub is no more than 2 m. Northeastern Federal University (NEFU) said that they plan to carry out long-term research, hoping to find whole cell nuclei with which to clone a mammoth. Korean scientists will also take part in this work.
