Cambodia intends to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize
Cambodia plans to nominate US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Prize for American mediation in negotiations with Thailand. This was reported on August 1 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) with reference to the country's Deputy Prime Minister Song Chantol.
Cambodia plans to nominate President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his help in reaching a ceasefire agreement that will end recent border clashes with Thailand.
In an interview with the publication, Chantol clarified that without the intervention of the American leader, Cambodia and Thailand would not have been able to conclude an agreement on the cessation of hostilities between the countries.
American political scientist Malek Dudakov said on July 8 that Trump's Nobel Prize would depend on his successful policy on the Ukrainian issue and in the Middle East, but so far the chances of an award are low. He clarified that the American leader had already been nominated for the award several times.
The escalation of the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia occurred on July 23. The military of both sides accused each other of firing the first shots and attacked each other's territories several times. On July 26, Trump demanded an immediate cessation of hostilities, noting that the United States does not want to conclude deals with any of the countries in an armed conflict. On July 28, Acting Thai Prime Minister Phum Tham Vechayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Maneta agreed to a ceasefire during talks in Kuala Lumpur.
